Take Six with Dan Clay, Senior Technical Support Consultant

Last spring, we announced that Allscripts Care Management is now part of the CarePort family. Since then, our expanded team has been driving innovation and inspiring creative collaboration, not just for Care Management but across the entire CarePort platform. We’re excited to continue introducing these colleagues and sharing their impact through the Take Six series in 2019.

How did you first learn about Allscripts, and what drew you to the company originally?

That’s a funny story actually. When I was new to Chicago, I was out exploring one day and I got to talking to someone at a restaurant. We chatted and became friendly and it turned out he worked for Allscripts. He told me about the company and mentioned they were hiring. After we chatted, I decided to do some research on my own and ultimately decided to submit my resume. I saw it as a good opportunity to grow professionally and really dive into the world of healthcare software. As I went through the interview process, I continued reading about the company and I just felt more and more like I’d be getting to do something to help people if I joined—and that felt great.

What kinds of things do you do in your role?

I’m one of the leaders of our Care Management support team. I spend the majority of my day doing whatever I can to help our Care Management users help their patients. I start my day reviewing email at my desk, catching up on anything I might have missed overnight. From there I can go down the path of working with the team on some of their cases, learning something new myself, running reports, or focusing on long-term organizational planning. It depends both on what the needs are “right now” and then what they will be over the course of the day. The variety keeps things interesting and is why I’ve been here almost seven years.

What do you enjoy most about the role?

I’m lucky that I get to work within an organization that takes our team’s input and acts on it going forward. I really enjoy a lot of the strategic planning that we’ve been doing around Support and working with leaders in other departments—on the Development side or Product Services and Product Management and with the Guide and Connect teams. What keeps me going forward here is that I get to make a difference. I get to impact what happens with the Care Management product and how we respond to things. It’s very rewarding.

What has it been like working with your new team – the CarePort team – over the past few months?

I mostly work on Care Management, but I have a weekly cross-functional meeting with the folks in Boston. I know I can reach out to them if I have questions and they know they can reach out to me—and we often do that. It’s been awesome working with the Boston team. CarePort really feels tightknit like a small company, but with the resources of a much larger one. I really love the culture. My team has been given a lot of freedom and encouragement to work on our service offerings and create an even better experience. We’ve also grown our services team in Chicago, and we’ve grown the number of account managers that are dedicated to our product. We have a bunch of rockstars on board. I’m really excited about what’s next and I can see the company growing for a long, long, time.

What’s something about you that coworkers would be surprised to learn?

What feels like a million years ago, I used to be a DJ. I DJ’ed weddings part time for fun. In fact, one of the weddings I DJ’ed was for an Allscripts coworker. It was a pretty good gig! I’m sort of infamous for blowing out the speakers on one of the cruises that I DJ’ed (laughs). I looked up at the speakers and all of sudden I just saw a ring of sparks. It was during the Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow” – very memorable!

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would buy?

I’d do two things – I’d contribute a lot of money to a charity, probably one that helps the homeless, especially homeless women and children. I’d also pay off my mortgage, my parents’ mortgage as well. I’d pay off my kids’ education. Settle all the family debts, if you will!

CarePort is growing by leaps and bounds, and we’re looking to fill positions on a few different teams. Check out our latest job opportunities
