Take Six with Rick Harrigan, Client Sales Executive

Last spring, we announced that Allscripts Care Management is now part of the CarePort family. Since then, our expanded team has been driving innovation and inspiring creative collaboration, not just for Care Management but across the entire CarePort platform. We’re excited to continue introducing these colleagues and sharing their impact through the Take Six series in 2019.

How did you first learn about Allscripts, and what attracted you to the company?

I came to the company a few years ago, when I was in a transition period professionally. I had been a teacher and a coach for a few years, and for various reasons I was looking for a change. Sales was appealing to me because of the personal connections and I had heard good things about Allscripts, so I interviewed with the company and was fortunate to get a position on the Referral Management team in early 2016. Now I’m three years in, CarePort and Allscripts have joined forces, and I’m also working with Connect and Insight. It’s an exciting time.

Tell us more about your role. What were you doing at Allscripts, and has that changed?

As I mentioned, I’m in the process of expanding my focus to include Connect and Insight on the post-acute side. Our team works on the introduction of the products, demoing of the products, and generally showing post-acute clients the additional capabilities we can now offer them. Regardless of the products the main thing is relationship building—staying in touch, keeping the lines of communication open between myself and clients. I want to understand their pain points and needs. I travel to skilled nursing homes and other facilities to meet onsite. And then on a day to day basis, my home base is the Raleigh office.

What do you enjoy most about Sales?

For me, the best part of this type of role is being able to connect with people on a personal level. The clients that we deal with have a real stake in using this technology because it’s ultimately for the good of their patients. Building relationships with them is important. We have a somewhat lengthy sales cycle, and I really get to know these folks. I visit them onsite, I have weekly calls, and in between I want to be there when they need help or trouble shooting. So, the trust factor, building relationships and having clients know that I’m in it for their best interest—that’s what I enjoy.

What’s your experience been joining the CarePort team?

All the meetings and calls that we’ve had over the last year or so to integrate the teams have reinforced the feeling that we’re doing something important and significant. That’s the feeling that I get, that’s the hope that I have for sure. Everybody’s excited about the mission of the company. You can really feel the excitement—it’s a tangible energy permeating from Lissy and the rest of the leadership team on down as we try to realize the CarePort vision. We’re building products that can really help our clients provide coordinated care.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to stay active, and I like to go to the gym. There are a million different classes from spin to boxing and I like to head over and do some of that stuff after work. I’m relatively new to Raleigh—I have been here just about two years—so whether it’s playing golf or going out to bars and restaurants, I’m still exploring the city and what it has to offer. I’m a big basketball fan too. I like playing basketball and officiating basketball. I do that on the weekends sometimes.

Speaking of basketball, rumor has it that you might have a claim to fame in this sport – true or false?

Yes, I guess that’s true. I played basketball in college and tried to keep the dream alive after. I played overseas in Ireland for a couple of seasons. I came back and was on a tour with the Harlem Globetrotters. I played on the Washington Generals. At a show, we would kind of follow them around—our job was to “play against them” but really be the butt of the joke and provide some entertainment. That was really fun. I was fortunate enough to be on tour with them for about six months, up and down the East Coast and through Canada.
