Take Six with Jordana Riley, Sr. Software Engineer

What is your role at CarePort and what aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

I am the first dedicated front end engineer that CarePort brought on board. I was a neurobiology major in college and focused on how the brain processes visual information.  Front end engineering lets me use that knowledge in a really practical way.

I really enjoy the point where design and engineering meet in order to build a usable interface – it’s like an ever-changing puzzle, which is fun to see come together in the end. I love that I get to work with our design, product management and engineering teams all on a daily basis.  I am also enjoying that this is the highest percentage of female engineers I have ever worked with – by almost double!

If you could switch your job with anyone else at CarePort for a day, whose job would you want and why?

My very first job out of college was tech support. I like interacting with the people who use what I am building so I think it would be really fun to spend a day with the implementation team and see what they see. Support is the best way to get to know how our customers use our products.

What is the best career advice someone has ever given you? And what piece of advice would you give to someone just starting out their engineering career?

The best piece of advice someone gave me is to really consider before saying no to learning something new. Even if it seems like it’s not something you need right now, it may be useful later down the line.

To those just starting out, there’s a lot about web engineering that changes every 3-5 years. Don’t get caught up in the frameworks, instead spend time focusing on the fundamentals.  If you don’t like the process of learning new things this might not be the path for you. You will be doing it constantly.

What is your all-time favorite book?

I’d have to say Lord of the Rings. I enjoy epic stories with lots of world-building and Lord of the Rings was one of the first ones I ever read.

People would be surprised if they knew:

I have taught over 100 people to juggle. It’s not as hard as it looks, there is one motion you need to learn, and once you have that down, just repeat!

What do you like to do outside of work?

I have many hobbies including scrapbooking, sewing, silversmithing and playing with my 3-D printer. I am also very passionate about an educational non-profit that I co-founded back in the mid-90s called Otherworld. The non-profit runs adventure weekends that get people out of their comfort zone and lets them try something different.
