Regulatory Landscape

Interoperability & Patient Access Final Rule

The CMS Interoperability & Patient Access Final Rule includes a section that modifies the CoPs to include event notifications. Hospitals with an EHR, including critical access and psychiatric hospitals, are required to send electronic patient notifications for patient admissions, discharges and transfers to PCPs, physicians and post-acute providers and suppliers. Hospitals must comply with the updated CoPs by May 1, 2021.

As hospitals work to comply with CMS’s patient event notification requirements, it is critical to understand the broader regulatory framework, and how the new patient event notification CoPs fit within this existing framework.
