naviHealth Care Transition Platform (formerly Curaspan) is joining CarePort, powered by WellSky.

Take Six with Chris Dolan, Senior Software Engineer

How did you first learn about CarePort Health and what drew you to the company?

I first learned about CarePort through a recruiter. I was looking for a change of pace. The recruiter asked me what kinds of things I was interested in, and I said, “I want to do something that helps other people.” He said, “Well, I have something for you!” And he put me in contact with Sean, the VP of engineering. From there, everyone I talked to while interviewing made me more excited about Guide, Connect, and Insight.

What does a typical day here look like for you?

My day begins with standup. Standup gives me an idea of what everyone is working on across the engineering, product, and design teams. It makes sure everyone’s on the same page. From that point on, it tends to be pretty heads down – mostly working on product features and fixing bugs.

What do you like most about working at CarePort?

Healthcare is a rapidly changing industry, so being able to work with creative and smart people in that kind of dynamic environment is a lot of fun. I really like how everyone is motivated and feels a sense of ownership, we have great team cohesion because of that.

What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this?

I got into computers when I was a teenager, so I sort of fell into a career in engineering. But there was a time, also in high school, when I was also kind of curious about the medical profession and being a doctor. The thing is, I just can’t stand the sight of blood, so I realized that was probably not going to work out.

What has been the most important innovation you’ve witnessed in your lifetime?

The advent of the internet – that’s probably one of the biggest things, at least in my opinion, that’s happened in the last hundred years as far as changing the economy and our society as a whole. Freedom of information is a huge change. I mean, you can go on YouTube and learn how to do anything from ride a bike to replacing pipes in your house – it’s all there, and it’s free, and it’s accessible.

Do you have a favorite quote?

Here’s a great one from Steve Jobs giving a Stanford commencement speech:

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.
