Take Six with Scott Magnoni, Senior Research Analyst

How did you first learn about CarePort Health and what drew you to the company?

Tom Martin (CarePort’s Director of Post-Acute Analytics) and I worked together at another company for about five years, and we stayed in touch even after we went our separate ways. When he came to CarePort last year, he reached out to me to let me know that he was going to be building out a team and that there would be an opportunity for me to come on board as well. A couple months later, he was ready to fill the position and so I took a closer look at the company. What I saw was a great opportunity to not only work with Tom again, but to really come into a younger company than I’d been at previously and help build out and grow the analytics department. It seemed like I’d get to do a lot of different things and be part of a really exciting environment.

What do you do in your role as Senior Research Analyst?

Our team–the data analytics team–has a goal of helping post-acute providers identify high-risk patients and manage populations with different levels of acuity. Since we are a new team doing brand new work, a lot of what I do is primarily project based. There’s a wide range of things from day to day—it could be as simple as tracking down and downloading data from CMS or as complex as developing models and building out new reports. That includes both coding the data to load into a report as well as building the report from scratch in ExcelIt’s quite a range of activities!

What aspect of your role do you enjoy most?

When exploring new data sets for a project, or model, for example, taking the time to dive into the data. I enjoy scanning it and finding new connections—that’s pretty exciting. Discovering something that you didn’t realize was there or you assumed one thing and it turns out something else is the case, that’s pretty cool.

What’s your experience been like at CarePort so far?

love the young, energetic environment, how open it is here – everyone communicates with each other well. You feel like you’re a part of something, that we’re all in it together and trying to accomplish something important.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m very passionate about Boston sports. I enjoy watching the Celtics and Patriots most of all, but I’ll passively watch the Bruins and Red Sox too. I am an avid video gamer as well. In terms of things outside the house, I like to hike. I also run, and one of the things I’m looking forward to is in May, I’m doing a Cape Cod Ragnar (that’s a relay race).

What’s the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?

Definitely plane tickets, my wife and I both love to travel! We’ve been all over the world—Iceland, Germany, Sweden, Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan and more—in the five years we’ve been together, but it feels like there’s just so much more to see. So many more places both of us want to get to. We actually have a trip to Spain coming up. If we won the lottery, we’d just make sure the cats were well taken care of and get on a plane!
